IS HEALING FOR THE BELIEVER?

The foundation for a belief in divine healing is a natural extension of the biblical understanding of Jesus Christ. Our salvation through Christ Jesus redeems us from both the nature and curse of sin (Romans 5:12; Galatians 3:13-14; Deuteronomy 28:15-68).

The Hebrew word, "shalom" and the Greek word, "soteria" translated "salvation" imply the ideas of deliverance, safety, wellness, healing, and prosperity. Salvation is a awesomely comprehensive term, that speak of all Christ's redemptive acts and processes; justification, redemption, grace, propitiation, forgiveness, sanctification, and glorification."

Christ Jesus provides complete wholeness. Isaiah 53:5 says, "But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed." His physical, spiritual and emotional wounds won our physical, spiritual and emotional healing.

Jesus our example, healed multitudes while He on earth and according to the scriptures, Jesus fulfilled the will of His Father when He healed people (John 4:34; 17:4). Matthew 8:16-17 says, "They brought to him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick." Physical healing was part of a true fulfillment of Isaiah 53:5. (See also Luke 4:18-19; 1 Peter 2:24).

John 14:11-12 tells us that healing is for the believer. "Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very work's sake. Truly, truly, I say unto you, He that believes on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go to my Father."

When Jesus sent out His disciples to minister in His name He told them to, "Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely you have received, freely give." (Matthew 10:8) There seems to be no indication that the practise of healing should cease. Instead, they continued to minister healing to the multitudes (Acts 5:12-16).

Healing is an essential part of the Great Commission given to us by Jesus Christ Himself. "And he said to them, Go you into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believes and is baptized shall be saved; but he that does not believe shall be condemned. And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover" (Mark 16:15-18). The healing power of the gospel is as viable today as it was in the early church.
