The bible contains several references to scientific and medical truths that is millennia ahead of its time. Many of these little jewels often only come to light when science makes a discovery that relates in some way to a statement in the bible. Then the proverbial light bulb goes off and people begin to see the Word of God in a new way. The bible is not intended to be an encyclopedia or a scientific text book so when it mentions the inner workings of humans, earth, space and so on, perhaps it is God gently saying to the world, "I'm here, I'm real and my ways are far greater than your ways... seek me and find out". For Christians, it is an extra affirmation of God's majesty, wisdom and power. Here are some of the statements in the bible that we've (so far) recognized as truths well ahead of the knowledge of man.

Geologic

For He draws up drops of water, which distill as rain from the mist, which the clouds drop down, and pour abundantly on man. (Job 36:27-28)

The hydrologic cycle, (evaporation, condensation) of the earth's water… was mentioned in the bible about 3000 years before it was recognized by science.

As for the earth, from it comes bread, but underneath it is turned up as by fire; (Job 28:5)

Even from observation of a volcano early man would have no knowledge of the inner workings of the earth's core if it were not for the scripture.

What is man, that You are mindful of him? And the son of man, that You visit him? For You have made him a little lower than God, And You have crowned him with glory and honor. You have made him to have dominion over the works of Your hands; You have put all things under his feet: All sheep and oxen -- even the beasts of the field, the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea, that pass through the paths of the seas. (Psalms 8:4-8)

Paths of the seas, better known as ocean currents, were discovered by man in the 1850’s. It might have been much later as well were it not for a Christian sailor that went to search for these "paths" because he believed what the bible stated.

I went down to the moorings of the mountains; the earth with its bars closed behind me for ever: yet You have brought up my life from the pit, O LORD my God. (Jonah 2:6)

Once again, scientists were a few centuries behind the bible with their discovery of tectonic plates and mountainous landscapes on the ocean floor.

A replica of Noah's Ark as described in the Bible was fabricated and placed in a wave tank under the assumption that it would not prove sea-worthy. Researchers discovered that the ship was virtually impossible to capsize and could withstand waves higher than 30 meters.

When plants and animals die, they decompose quickly yet billions of plants, animals and insects from around the globe have been preserved as fossils. Geologists now know that fossils only form if the subject is rapidly buried in sediment or the like. This agrees exactly with what the Bible says occurred during the global Flood. (Genesis 7)

By the breath of God ice is given, and the broad waters are frozen. (Job 37:10)

From whose womb comes the ice? And the frost of heaven, who gives it birth? The waters harden like stone, and the surface of the deep is frozen. (Job 38:29-30)

Prior to the global flood the earth was apparently subtropical so of course ice and snow weren't present. After the flood, the Bible mentions ice often.

Who has measured the waters in the hollow of His hand, measured heaven with a span and calculated the dust of the earth in a measure? (Isaiah 40:12)

God has given us just the right amount of water to sustain life. Science now recognizes that if there were more or less water, the earth would not support life because its effect on atmospheric composition.

Anthropologic

The bible states that early humans came from one set of ancestors and that all spoke one language. It also speaks of a man, whose name Peleg means "division". The scripture then explains that he was so named because in his days the earth was divided. (Genesis 10:25) These has all been affirmed by fairly recent science including the continental drift.

Medical

And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being. (Genesis 2:7)

Researchers at NASA's Ames Research Center confirmed that every element in humans can be found in the soil, prompting one of the scientists to say, "...the biblical scenario for the creation of life turns out to be not far off the mark."

Long before we knew anything about DNA or the molecular world, the bible stated:

For You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother's womb. I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, and that my soul knows very well. My frame was not hidden from You when I was made in secret, and skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed and in Your book they all were written, the days fashioned for me, when as yet there were none of them. (Psalm 139:13-16)

The bible instructed the Israelites to circumcise their male children eight days after birth. We now know that eight days after birth, a healthy baby is best able to form healing blood clots. The blood compound to facilitate this clotting is present at birth in small amounts but actually drops to its lowest level on the sixth day. After the eighth day, pain receptors develop to the point of making the procedure much more painful.

The ancient Israelites had hygiene, quarantine and sanitation practices that were far superior to that of other ancient cultures, but also to that of medical standards practiced as recently as 100 years ago. It was not until this century that medical science had a full understanding of disease-causing pathogens. In the 1840's roughly 30% of women who gave birth in hospitals were dying of bacterial infections. Women who gave birth at home remained relatively unaffected. This only changed when an obstetrician had medical staff wash their hand with chlorinated lime before examining patients. The maternal death rate was reduced from 12% to 1% in 2 years. Not until Louis Pasteur demonstrated that most infectious diseases were caused by micro-organisms, did sanitary practices improve.

This is the law, when a man dies in a tent: all who come into the tent, and all who are in the tent, shall be unclean seven days, and every open vessel, which has no cover fastened on it, is unclean. Whoever in the open field touches one who is slain by a sword, or who has died, or a bone of a man, or a grave, shall be unclean seven days. (Numbers 19:14-16)

If there is any man among you who becomes unclean by some occurrence in the night, then he shall go outside the camp; he shall not come inside the camp. But it shall be, when evening comes, that he shall wash with water; and when the sun sets, he may come into the camp. Also you shall have a place outside the camp, where you may go out; and you shall have an implement among your equipment, and when you sit down outside, you shall dig with it and turn and cover your refuse. (Deuteronomy 23:10-13)

Everyone who touches its flesh must be holy. And when its blood is sprinkled on any garment, you shall wash that on which it was sprinkled, in the holy place. But the earthen vessel in which it is boiled shall be broken. And if it is boiled in a bronze pot, it shall be both scoured, and rinsed in water. (Leviticus 6:27-28)

The Israelites were instructed to wash themselves and their clothes in running water if they had a bodily discharge, if they came in contact with another person's discharge, or if they had touched a dead human or animal carcass. They knew that even uncovered vessels that were in the vicinity of a dead body could be infected, and if a dead carcass touched a vessel it was to be destroyed. In addition, the Israelites were instructed to bury their human waste outside of camp, and to burn the waste of their animals.

These you may eat, of all that are in the water: whatever in the water has fins and scales, whether in the seas or in the rivers--that you may eat. But all in the seas or in the rivers that do not have fins and scales, all that move in the water or any living thing which is in the water, they are an abomination to you. They shall be an abomination to you; you shall not eat of their flesh, and you shall regard their carcasses as an abomination. 'Whatever in the water does not have fins or scales--that shall be an abomination to you. (Leviticus 11:9-12)

Physicians generally agree that dietary guidelines which support longer life-spans were first developed by religious movements including those founded in the 1800s, particularly by the Seventh-day Adventists. The Seventh-day Adventists get their guidelines from a careful study of the Bible. Scripture states that we should not consume sea creatures which do not have fins or scales. We now know that bottom-feeders tend to consume waste and are likely to carry disease. The bible also forbade the Israelites to eat pork. (Deuteronomy 14:8). Not too long ago, science learned that eating pork causes a parasitic infection called trichinosis. The larval form of these parasites can even survive thorough cooking.

Stellar

Therefore from one man, ...were born as many as the stars of the sky in multitude-- innumerable as the sand which is by the seashore. (Hebrews 11:12)

Before telescopes, humans (that did not adhere to biblical truth) figured that the sky contained about 1000 stars but the bible clearly states otherwise.

It is He who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers, who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them out as a tent to dwell in. (Isa 40:22)

In our page, "Scientific Evidence for God" we refer to recent scientific research that shows that the universe is expanding. Notice how the scripture above says, "stretches" not "stretched". It is an active, on-going process.

He stretches out the north over empty space; he hangs the earth on nothing (Job 26:7)

Until about 300 BC, most people believed that the earth was perched on the back of a giant animal or on the shoulders of a human giant (Titan) but 3000 years earlier God told us the truth.

To establish a weight for the wind and apportion the waters by measure. (Job 28:25)

He also told us that air has mass and weight, long before scientists could quantify it.

----

He drew a circular horizon on the face of the waters at the boundary of light and darkness. (Job 26:10)

Again, when most of the world thought that the earth was flat... God was describing the curvature of the horizon... something that is only visible from high in the atmosphere.

In them has He set a tabernacle for the sun, which is like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, and rejoices like a strong man to run its race. Its rising is from the end of the heaven, and its circuit to the other end; And there is nothing hidden from its heat. (Psalm 19:4b-6)

Recent astrophysical data show that the sun does follow a VERY large orbit or "course."

For the heavens will vanish away like smoke, the earth will grow old like a garment... (Isaiah 51:6b)

Is this not a reference to the 2nd law of thermodynamics?

Atomic

By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible. (Hebrews 11:3)

Not only does this verse say that God created everything, it may be an indication of the "invisible" atomic material He used.

Now this shall be the plague with which the Lord will strike all the people who fought against Jerusalem: Their flesh shall dissolve while they stand on their feet, their eyes shall dissolve in their sockets, and their tongues shall dissolve in their mouths. (Zechariah 14:12)

Not until the 1940's could anyone have understood this to be a perfect description of what happens to the human body during a nuclear incident. This is part of a prophecy about a coming nuclear attack during a siege against Jerusalem.

By what way is light diffused, or the east wind scattered over the earth? (Job 38:24)

God was asking this of Job. The inference here is that of course God knew, because He designed it. Sir Isaac Newton studied light only 400 years ago and discovered that white light is made of seven colors, which can be “parted” and then recombined.

When He made a law for the rain, And a path for the thunderbolt (Job 28:26)

Only within the last decade or so, it was discovered that just prior to a lightning strike, a small stream of electrons establishes a nearly invisible "path" for the much larger lightning bolt to take.

Animal

Behold now behemoth, which I made along with you; He eats grass like an ox. See now, his strength is in his hips, and his power is in his stomach muscles. He moves his tail like a cedar; the sinews of his thighs are tightly knit. His bones are like beams of bronze, his ribs are like bars of iron. He is the first of the ways of God; Only He who made him can bring near His sword. Surely the mountains yield food for him, and all the beasts of the field play there. He lies under the lotus trees, in a covert of reeds and marsh. The lotus trees cover him with their shade; the willows by the brook surround him. Indeed the river may rage, Yes he is not disturbed; He is confident, though the Jordan gushes into his mouth, though he takes it in his eyes, Or one pierces his nose with a snare. (Job 40:15-24).

God gave a remedy to control pests centuries ago. He told Israel to set aside one year in seven for their fields to lie unplanted (fallow). Insects winter in the stalks of the previous year’s crop, hatch in the spring, and perpetuate by laying eggs in the new crop. If the crop is denied one year in seven, the pests have nothing to subsist upon, and are thereby controlled. (Leviticus 25:1-24)

The Main Point

The Bible is inspired by God. More importantly than professing scientific knowledge, the Bible reveals the purpose of our existence. Scripture explains where our conscience came from and also the root cause of death. The Bible offers the only remedy for sin, suffering, and death. God’s Word presents the only perfect, sinless Savior – who died for our sins and rose from the dead. Jesus is the Creator (John 1; Colossians 1). He said “I and My Father are one” (John 10:30). He said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6). For more on this, see Who Is Jesus?. Christ also promises His followers: “I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish” (John 10:28). Your eternal destiny will be determined by your choice. There is only one provision for sin. Jesus died in your place. Only by faith in Christ’s finished work will you be saved. This is God’s free gift offered to all.
