SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE FOR GOD

There was a time when science and religion were at odds. In the early 20th century, many thought that science would give us the answers to all of our problems and "do away" with our need for a loving God. Some people still think that way. As the bible predicted in Daniel 12:4, knowledge of God and knowledge in general would increase to the point that God would become evident to all people willing to see. I got my first taste of this in a first year archeology course. I was in a liberal University, studying a secular course taught by a secular professor but one day he invited a graduate student in to tell us about the latest findings from the dig she had been working on. When she said that they had found archeological evidence that supported the Bible's description of a location previously unknown, I was elated. In recent years, scientific discoveries that support biblical claims are coming in so fast that they are hard to keep up with. Things are coming very quickly to the point where none of us will be able to be indecisive. We will either have to accept proof of God's existence or blatantly reject it. Recent films including, The Case for a Creator * and Privileged Planet*, detail many recent scientific discoveries.

Molecular Machines

Simply put, these are microscopic machines that could not have been developed slowly over eons (as evolutionists would say) because they contain systems that contain very specific parts that do very specific jobs that are useless unless they are fully developed and in place with all of the other fully developed parts of the system. Bacterial Flagellum is an example of this. This is essentially a highly efficient inboard motor that bacteria use to swim about. The flagellum contains a propeller, a rotor, and stator and is powered by a flow of acids. The idea of a bacterium slowly developing the beginnings of a propeller over millions of years goes against evolutionist theory because that rotor has absolutely no usefulness unless it is fully developed and working in conjunction with all of the other fully developed parts of the system. It can't be driven by desirable selective mutation because until the full system is developed, the need that evolutionists would say sparked the change simply can't be met.

Laminins

According to Wikipedia, Laminins are "a family of proteins that are an integral part of the structural scaffolding of basement membranes in almost every animal tissue." Laminins are cell adhesion molecules. They hold each cell of our bodies to the next cell and without them, we would fall apart. The interesting part of all of this is what the molecule happens to look like.

It would seem that God, who wants us to seek and find Him, designed the molecule that holds us together to look very much like the symbol of the blessed sacrifice that holds us spiritually to Him. The physical image of Laminins actually is rougher and more organic than the figures above but all three are true representations of our physical glue. Figure 3 contains the most powerful symbolism (found in secular textbooks by the way) of the three. Is this not God (do you think that He didn't know what this molecule looked like when He created it?) subtly persuading us to recognize Him?

Uniqueness of our Planet

Science understands that there are many factors that a planet needs to meet to be able to support complex life (anything more than bacteria or plankton). Some of these are:

  • Oxygen Rich Atmosphere

  • At the Correct Distance from Sun

  • In Habitable Zone of the Sun

  • Protected by Large Planets

In order to help shield us from cosmic debris

  • Plate Tectonics

Crust has to be right thickness to regulate the planet's interior temperature, recycle carbon, mix chemical elements essential to living organisms and shape the continents.

  • Surrounded by Magnetic Field

Only a liquid iron core in constant motion provides this invisible shield that protects our atmosphere and us from harmful cosmic rays

  • Orbited by Large Moon

To stabilize our axial tilt and regulate our seasons

  • Sun Has to be Right Size and Type

If our sun were smaller, we'd have to be closer to it to maintain life but then our planet would stop spinning, turning our planet into a dead rock that is superheated on one side and frozen on the other

These are only a few of the 20 or so factors determined to be necessary for complex life to exist. The odds of ANY planet meeting all of these requirements is 1 in 100,000,000,000,000 (one one-thousandth of one, one trillionth.) There are factors at a more universal level, called Cosmological Constants, which are needed for us to exist as well. There are too many to discuss in detail but here are a few.

  • Gravitational Constant

If there were a ruler spanning the known universe (billions of light years) and the ruler was divided into increments of one inch each and the current "setting" for the strength of gravity in the universe were moved ONE INCH from where it is now, nothing larger than a pea could exist. Think about that for a minute. If gravity was moved ONE INCH on a ruler spanning the whole universe, then complex life could not form. Doesn't this say to you that our universe is highly tuned by an intelligent designer?

  • Nuclear Force

If the "mini gravity" at the atomic level of matter were any weaker or stronger than it is, then chemical bonds could not take place... no chemistry... no life.

  • Right Location in the Galaxy

We are situated in a relatively safe and clear zone between two of our galaxy's spiral arms. If we were in the centre of the galaxy, we would be in danger of destruction from super novas etc. If we were in a dense portion of one of the arms, we would face similar danger. We happen to also be in just the right place to look out into space and see much more of it than we could if we were surrounded by the dense material in a spiral arm. Not that long ago, the "Big Bang" theory came into existence after Albert Einstein had theorized that the universe is in a state of either expansion or contraction. Later scientists refined this model to assert that the universe is in a state of expansion and therefore it came into being at some point in time. This matches quite well with what the bible states. What is also amazing is that the rate of expansion is just great enough to allow for planets and stars etc. to form.

  • The Universe is Flooded with Cosmic Energy

Most is deadly or useless to life on Earth but of the wide range of wavelengths of this energy a small sliver of the spectrum contains the elements needed to support complex life. This tiny sliver also "just happens" to contain the wavelengths we use to distinguish a bright red flower from a deep blue ocean. Think about that for a moment. We take the ability to see colour for granted. Other life forms on this planet may not see the array of colours that we do (perhaps some see more) but is it really necessary that we can differentiate the colours of a bright green tree frog from a clown fish? Even evolutionists would have a hard time explaining the need for this range of colour recognition as a survival mechanism. I don't need colour vision to know if I'm being stalked by a tiger instead of a toucan. Perhaps this, along with so many of the other senses that we take for granted is the gift of a loving God.

Archeological Evidence

Excavations at the Phoenician city of Carthage (mentioned in 2 Kings 23:10) reveal evidence of the practice of child sacrifice to Molech that God had condemned. Molech was a pagan deity, as was the Ammonite god Milcom (1 Kings 11: 5; Lev.20:1-5) Molech was associated with the major deity of the area, Baal (see Jer 7:31, 32; 19:5,6; 32:35).

Excavations at Jerusalem have uncovered sacred shrines used in solar worship dedicated to the sun dating back from the time of Jehoshaphat. Small horses with solar disks on their foreheads have been found at Jerusalem and Hazor. (2 Kings 23:11).

Inscriptions on ancient clay tablets uncovered in Palestine, mention David and Goliath.

The pool at Siloam has recently been uncovered.

Although not a recent discovery, study of the ancient city of Jericho indicate that it's heavy walls had collapsed on themselves, consistent with the biblical account.

Many excursions to the mountains of Ararat have resulted in several competent and consistent sightings of the ark of Noah. Although damaged by an earthquake in the 1600's the ark is visible during times of dry warm weather, when the ice and snow recede. There are even those who claim to have been inside the ark and have collected wood from it.

A fingernail sized clay seal impression found in the old city of Jerusalem bears the name of "Gedaliah the son of Passhur" whom the bible mentions as serving during king Zedekiah's reign. (Jeremiah 38:1-4). It was found near other similar seals containing the names of other biblical figures from the same period which are also mentioned in the book of Jeremiah.

The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork.
Psalm 19:1 (NKJV)
